SELAH PÉREZ VILLAR

I am indeed a pianist but I am not only a pianist. And although this site is primarily concerned with what I do best, that is, playing the piano, I firmly believe that whatever activity we engage in is necessarily informed by everything that make us into the particular human beings that we are.

That's why you won't find a biography right where you were expecting it. In fact, despite their usefulness, I find biographies pretty shallow and misleading. More on that later. However you can still read mine here!

Apart from playing the piano, there is something else I do a lot of: thinking. I don't claim any originality whatsoever for we are all programmed, as humans, to constantly engage in rational thinking. We may, however, be inclined towards thinking in different directions according to our nature, interests, goals, etc.

I am interested in the human mind, in particular I like to think about thinking!I adore logic; this being such a broad term employed equally in science and humanities under a myriad umbrellas of meaning, I employ the term mostly in reference to deductive logic.

I believe our world, and indeed the world of music, function in ways that many a time escape the inevitability of logic. I will further reflect on this in subsequent writings; after all, this is just my welcoming page and therefore its purpose is to introduce myself in a couple of lines (unfortunately economising words is something I am not good at at all)

So, welcome to the website of Selah Pérez-Villar. I am a pianist, but I can't disassociate myself from my views, my understanding of society and the world, the traits that make up my personality, my experience and expectations. I dislike 'conventionality' primarily because it's limiting and, secondly, because it only exists in the minds of those who seek it. No-one can escape themselves; conventionality equals imitation, and imitation implies that you are forgetting who you are whilst immersed in the pursuit of becoming somebody else.
